The word ‘digital’ has long since lost its innovative and futuristic shine. The digital world has become a permanent and crucial part of our lives, rendering the once prominent competitive stance between analog and digital null. We think and communicate through our digital devices, watching videos, taking pictures, documenting events, and uploading our personal lives to social media. Consumers no longer read manuals, instead opting to watch YouTube videos for instructions. Images are constantly being uploaded, and people are refreshing their feeds nonstop. The virtual world brought about by digital devices forms a connection with reality, and through the virtual world, we in turn experience reality.

Phygital Reality is a group show presenting the works of New York-based artists Eric Shaw (B.1983), Anne Vieux (B.1985), and emerging artist Jo Jae(B. 1990), who was selected as the featuring artist of the 2021 edition of the ‘great exhibition’ program at G Gallery. ‘Phygital’ is a combination of the words physical and digital, a new term which encompasses the works of all three artists.¹ Each artist constantly connects what is digital with what is physical, smoothly melding the two worlds through their art.

Eric Shaw draws images with smartphone applications and layering them onto both canvas and screen, and Anne Vieux uses digital devices such as scanning machines to experiment with light and movement, manipulate and distort images, and break down the boundaries between the physical world and virtual reality. Jo Jae explores the dominant sensation of the era, using QR codes to guide viewers through the transition of sculpture to video and thus expanding the bounds of perception. These digitally adept artists use images that they create on smartphone drawing applications and programs such as Illustrator and Photoshop. These images are transferred back to the canvas by the artist's hand or made into physical results such as sculptures.

Today, we are closer to the virtual world than ever, our social experiences occurring almost primarily through digital screens. Phygital Reality will transfer this intangible world into physical spaces, and through this process, provide us with an opportunity to think about the relationship between digital and physical, and virtual and reality.
